Picking the Right Time/Season for Construction Is Very Important.

If there is one thing about people that stays constant irrespective of their religion and beliefs, it’s the people’s wait for an auspicious and good time (Shubha Muhurata) to start something, preceded by the worshiping of gods by Prayer Ceremonies (Pooja) asking them to bless the task at hand.

And in those same lines, falls Hinduism. Without the desired ceremony not even a single stone is set to begin with.

The Muhurat for such ceremonies always falls on a specific time frame. Although you can consult with a Pandit to get a precise date and time for you, some websites chart out dates for such ceremonies for the entire year.

Best Months For Constructions As Per Hindu Calendar

According to the Hindu calendar, 4 months (Mass) of the year are the best to start constructing, however, three of them are supposed to be avoided at all times. Each of the 4 months is said to bring prosperity, happiness and luck to the people. The months in the Hindu Calendar fall in between two adjacent months of the Western calendar.

Favorable Months

Months to Reconsider

Phalgun Mass (March-April) Bhadrapad Mass (August-September)
Vaishakh Mass (April-May) Ashwin (September-October)
Kartik Mass (October-November) Push (December-January)
Magh Mass (January-February)

Why Bhoomi Pooja?

The pooja done before any kind of work can be done on land, agricultural or construction-wise is called Bhoomi Pooja. It is a very important ceremony as it is strongly believed in the Hindu culture that digging out pieces of land or constructing it eradicates the insects and other creatures of their homes. So, to free oneself from the curses and negativities, The Bhumi Pujan is held significant. It is also done as a form of gratitude to the land for crops by farmers.

Bhoomi Pooja Dates

Time in The Backend

One of the first things to think about after finalizing the project is deciding when the construction for the project begins. It is after this decision that the time frame for the whole project is determined, which is inclusive of several back-end processes including planning, contractor booking and so on.

These backend processes are not weather dependent but they take a significant amount of time.

On average, it takes about a fortnight to a month to finalize the design and other details of the project. Another month or two are put up for the government body approval for plan finalization. Then an estimated budget is prepared. Furthermore, it takes about a fortnight to a month to search for suitable contractors for the project and finalize the pricing structure quote.

One of the major factors that play a role in deciding the timeline is the typical climate and the annual seasonal temperature fluctuations of the particular site.

Although construction can go on in any season, certain safety measures are supposed to be taken concerning the workers and materials on site.

Constructions in Different Seasons

Construction During Rainy Season (Monsoon)

July to Mid-September 30 to 35 Degree Celsius  Wet, hot, and humid

The back-end processes easily require 3-4 months for execution, therefore even if the design process is initiated in the monsoon, it wouldn’t be until it descends that the actual construction process will begin.

But if your backend work is done and execution begins in the monsoon then certain safety measures such as

  • Onsite Waterproof storage area for cement.
  • Securing the temporary electrical connections during construction.
  • Water pumps to remove water from excavated areas of the site.
  • Locally bought concrete
  • Surplus amount of Tarpaulin at hand to cover the concrete area from intermittent rain showers.

Apart from these safety measures monsoon proves to be a good time for home builders. There is nothing to be afraid of.

Construction During Autumn Season

September end to November 20 to 30 Degree Celsius   Pleasant

Autumn is a very favorable season for construction. This is because the temperature is not as cold as to make the soil too stiff for concrete laying, neither is it too hot for the labor to work. Furthermore, If the structure is for livestock, then the construction will be ready just in time for winter. Livestock will have a cozy and roomy interior as opposed to a chilly outdoor pasture.

In addition to this, It also has a few more advantages as mentioned below,

    • Low Demand for construction hence, Constructors have few projects to execute, which means they can spend more time on your construction and stay on schedule. With contractor demand on the low-end, costs are usually lower as well.
    • Better Soil Conditions
    • Faster Permit Approval

Construction During Winter

December to January 5 to 25 Degree Celsius  Very Cool

It is not very advisable to start construction in the winters, as the soil gets too cold for the concrete to lay and set. However, it is fairly comfortable for renovation and remodeling of the interiors, and the low cost of materials also creates a financial advantage.

To counter the problem of less daylight in winter, extra lighting can be used to complete most of the interior works. However, this generally does not work well for any exterior work. Any exterior work that needs to be completed in the winter months must be completed during daylight hours.

Construction During Spring

February to March 20 to 25 Degree Celsius  Sunny and pleasant

While the weather in spring is comparable to that of autumn, construction is a whole other matter. Spring is typically wet and colder in the beginning. So it is not a very favorable time for pouring concrete. The windy nature of it in the beginning in most parts of the country also proves it to be a difficult season to do any outdoor work.  Hence, this season is much preferred to complete most of the interior works.

However, conditions are seen to be more comfortable for exterior construction in the later stages of spring, closer to Summer.

Construction During Summer

April to June 25 to 45 Degree Celsius  Hot

Summer is extremely comfortable, especially for lengthy projects. However, the material prices are at a serious hike due to increased demand, and you can also see a delay in your projects.

At 100 Pillars Constructions, we incorporate some unique construction techniques and designs that can keep your house cooler and enable you to have a cooler summer, few of the techniques we adopt are as follows,

  5. Install Cupola
  6. Adoption of Suitable Construction Material
  7. Use Low Thermal Mass Materials
  8. Use Shading Devices
  • Shubh Muhurat to Start Construction
Just as the dates for Bhoomi pooja, it is fairly easy for a Pandit to chart out the Shubh Muhurat for various things for the year.
  • Grih Pravesh

Grih Pravesh or House Warming is a social event that is hosted by a house owner, once he moves in. It also generally includes a pooja ceremony for which it is advised to plan for the Grih Pravesh in advance. The house is decorated with fragrant flowers and cleaned to the point of this auspicious occasion.
